candidate has ever become president without carrying ohio. recent polls show romney is down in the state by anywhere from 4 to 7 points against the president. so he's not doing great in ohio but he's faring well financially after a trip to los angeles over the weekend. romney brought in $6 million in just one night at a fund-raiser in beverly hills where about 1500 people paid up to $50,000 each to see the candidate speak. ann romney ran into a little trouble when her plane had to make an emergency landing this weekend. she is safe and sound but her husband was naturally a little bit nervous especially because he cannot figure out why airplane windows don't go down. romney told the "los angeles times" that's the biggest problems with a plane in trouble is you can't get anymore oxygen on the plane because the windows do not roll down. obviously one of the many reasons that airplane windows don't open is because at that altitude, there's not enough oxygen to get passengers any air. we're back with more bill after

say the reason mr. romney is way down is because the screen that the pollsters use heavily favors the democrat. and in the last month or so, some polls had as many as 10% more democrats polled than republicans. i sent an e-mail to scott rasmussen yesterday and i asked what the breakdown was on how many republicans and democrats he does right now because many regard him as the most accurate. currently rasmussen polls 38% democrat. 36% republican. and 2026% -- 26% independent. so democrats, by two points in the rasmussen poll. >> gretchen: it's interesting because i think this story becomes bigger because what do these poll results do to the psyche of the american public when they continue to see these polls? is there some sort of a subliminal message there that if you keep seeing obama on top, obama on top, obama on top, you know, but it's worth asking that bigger question because it's more, i think, than just these daily numbers. i think psychologically, there is a big question there as well. dick morris weighed in on this earlier on our show. >> these pollsters are using the 2008

the president will begin three days of intensive preparation in nevada. on monday, romney will hunker down for two days in denver, the site of wednesday's debate. in romney's sessions president obama will be played by ohio senator rob portman who was on romney's short list for vice president. on stage with the president will be massachusetts senator john kerry who will play romney. kerry and romney knew each other well when romney was governor of massachusetts both campaigns are desperately trying to lower expectations. in a memo leaked to the press a top romney adviser called the president one of the most talented political communicators in modern history and noted the president has engaged in eighty-one-on-one presidential debates while this is romney's first. the obama campaign is also down playing expectations. they say he hasn't had enough time to prepare for the debate because he's been so busy as president dealing with a series of crises in the middle east. >> chip reid in boston. thanks. >>> for more on campaign 2012, we turn to jonathan allen, a senior political correspondent from
